Child Counselling & Art Therapy
Therapy that feels safe, not clinical
If you've landed here, you're probably worried about someone small (or not so small anymore). Our online child counselling and art therapy sessions give children and teens a safe, friendly space to work through big feelings — from wherever they feel most comfortable, usually their own bedroom floor with a favourite toy nearby.
No waitlists. No traffic. No sitting in a beige waiting room pretending to read a 2011 magazine.
Just qualified, caring practitioners, available 7 days a week from 6am to 8pm.
You’re Not Overreacting - You’re Paying Attention
Parents tell us this constantly: "I don't know if this is a real problem or just a phase."
Here's the thing — you don't need to wait until it's a crisis. You don't need a diagnosis, a referral, or a tidy explanation. Noticing that something's shifted in your child is reason enough.
You might be seeing:
Big emotional reactions that don't seem to match the situation
Sleep that's gone sideways, or new fears at bedtime
Tummy aches, headaches, or "I feel sick" before school
Pulling away from friends, family, or activities they used to love
Anger that comes out sideways — at siblings, at you, at the dog
Big changes at home: separation, grief, a move, a new family shape
A teen who's gone quiet, and you can't tell if it's normal or not
Worry that seems to run the show
You don't have to be certain. You just have to be curious enough to ask.
What is Child Counselling?
Child counselling is a safe, confidential space where young people (from early childhood through to teens) can talk about what's on their mind — big feelings, changes at home or school, friendship troubles, worries about the future, grief, anxiety, or just life's tricky bits.
Sometimes kids find it easier to talk to a counsellor than to a parent or teacher. There's no pressure. No "you should feel better by now." Just a trained & qualified specialist professional who gets it, listens without judgment, and helps them make sense of things.
Many children benefit from counselling when:
Parents are separating or divorcing
They're grieving a loss
Anxiety or stress is affecting school or friendships
They're navigating big changes (puberty, moving house, identity questions)
They've experienced something upsetting
They're struggling to regulate big feelings
They're curious about their identity or sexuality (we're fully affirming of LGBTQIA+ young people)
What is Creative & Art-Based Therapy for Children, and Why Does It Work So Well?
Here's a truth every parent knows: ask a child "how are you feeling?" and you'll get a shrug, a "dunno", or a suspiciously detailed update about Minecraft.
Children often don't have the words yet. But they almost always have the drawing.
Creative and Art-based therapy for children uses drawing, colour, collage, clay, movement and imaginative play as the language of the session. The child doesn't have to explain themselves — they show, and our practitioner gently follows. Many kids open up faster through art. It's evidence-based and really effective for anxiety, trauma, grief, and self-expression.
Drawing what the worry looks like, then deciding what to do with it
Using colour to sort out feelings that are all tangled together
Making something with their hands while a hard conversation happens sideways (this is often when kids talk most)
Story and character work for children who find "talking about me" too exposing
Zero pressure to produce anything good. There is no art critic. There is no fridge-worthiness requirement.
Our children and families specialist, Joanna, is trained and experienced in art-based therapy approaches with children and young people as young as 5 years — and it's genuinely rare to find this offered online in Australia.
What this actually looks like in a session
Do we need to buy special supplies?
Nope. Paper and whatever's in the pencil case is plenty. If your child has clay, textas, glitter glue or a beloved box of odds and ends, great — but we're not asking you to hit the art shop before session one.
Our Approach
We're LGBTQIA+ affirming. If your child or teenager is questioning their identity, exploring their sexuality, or navigating gender questions — you're in the right place. Our counsellors are trained, experienced, and genuinely supportive of all identities. We're also trauma and neurodiversity aware, informed, and trained - and we don't do judgment. Ever.
Your child’s feelings matter. We’re here to help them thrive.
Teen Counselling Online - For the Ones Who “Don’t Need Therapy”
Teenagers are a different species of client, and we like them enormously.
Online works particularly well here, because it hands a teen something they rarely get: control. They choose their space. They can have their headphones. They don't have to walk past anyone they know to get to an appointment.
We support young people with anxiety, low mood, school stress, friendship and social pressure, family separation, grief, identity, neurodivergence, and the general chaos of being 14. We also have child and youth counsellors who specialise in working with LGBTQIA+ youth.
We are LGBTQIA+ inclusive and gender-diverse affirming, for real. Halo Journey was founded by two women who are partners in business and in life, and 55% of our team have lived experience as members of the community. Your young person's name and pronouns will be respected from the first minute, without them having to explain, justify, or educate anybody. That's not a webpage promise — it's who we are.

FAQs
-
If your child is struggling with big feelings, facing a tough change, or you're simply worried about their wellbeing, a chat with a counsellor is a good first step. There's no "right" time - early support often prevents bigger problems down the road.
-
For a lot of children, it's actually better. We've found that in many cases, kids actually focus better at home. They're in their own space, with their own things, on their own turf — which lowers the stress enormously. There's no unfamiliar building, no waiting room, no car trip home in loaded silence. Screens are also native territory for most kids, which takes the edge off. And yes, it's safe — all our counsellors are qualified and insured. Sessions are completely confidential (except of course in child safety cases, which we're legally required to report).
-
That's normal. A quick chat beforehand helps. Most kids relax once they meet their counsellor and realise it's not "scary shrink" stuff. We've got proven techniques for helping reluctant kids feel safe & comfortable.
-
Generally, for under-13s, we often start with an intake just with the parent/guardian and arrange to every-so-often bring the parent into the last 10 minutes of the session (with the child's permission). For older kids and teens, it's 100% confidential - they need privacy to open up and are given complete autonomy in the process. This is non-negotiable and crucial. We'll keep you in the loop about progress only with their knowledge and without breaching their trust.
-
Of course, each young person we meet with is made aware in their first session about the limits of confidentiality and our duty of care to report anything to parents in the case that we deem a risk or a concern that meets this criteria. The therapist can explain more about this in your free introductory phone call with them.
-
It varies. Some kids benefit from 6-8 sessions and feel ready to move on. Others work through deeper stuff over months. Your counsellor will check in with you in terms of the number of appointments necessary, the appropriate spacing between sessions, and be honest about this.
-
Sometimes there's a grumble at the start. Almost always, that softens once they realise this hour is theirs — not a report card, not a telling-off, and not a place where they're in trouble. We'll also have a chat with you about how to best introduce it to your child to help them feel good about it.
-
Good news: they don't have to, not straight away. Our practitioners don't lead with interrogation, ever. Session one with very young children is often mostly play, drawing, or the practitioner being introduced to every single toy in the room. Trust first, talking later.
-
We work with children as young as 5 all the way through to teens and young adults — the approach simply changes to suit them. For younger children, sessions lean heavily on art, play and imagination. For older children and teens, it's a blend of talking and creative work. If you're unsure whether your child is "old enough", give us a call and we'll talk it through.
-
It depends on what you're after. Psychologists are registered health practitioners who can carry out formal psychological assessment and diagnosis. Our practitioners are qualified counsellors and psychotherapists registered with bodies such as PACFA and ACA — they provide therapeutic support, emotional skill-building and creative therapy, without the assessment or diagnostic component. If your child needs a formal diagnosis, your GP is the right first stop. If they need a safe, skilled space to work through what they're feeling, that's us — and no referral is needed.
-
No. You can book directly with us, no GP referral required but of course, we accept them
-
Absolutely — this is a really big part of what we do. Children's counselling can run alongside our Couples Counselling and/or Family Dispute Resolution services, so support wraps around both the child and the family at the same time.
