Online counselling vs coaching vs psychology: what's right for me?

So you've decided you want some support. Great move. Seriously. But now you're staring at a browser tab full of tabs (we see you) wondering: do I need a counsellor? A life coach? A psychologist? What even is the difference?

You're not alone — this is one of the most common questions we get at Halo Journey, and it's a genuinely good one. The world of mental health and wellbeing support can feel like a maze of job titles and acronyms. Let's cut through the confusion.

Counselling & psychotherapy: for when life feels heavy

Counselling and psychotherapy are for people navigating emotional pain, mental health challenges, relationship difficulties, trauma, grief, anxiety, or anything that's weighing on their inner world.

Think of a counsellor or psychotherapist as a trained, non-judgmental space-holder. They help you explore what's going on beneath the surface, understand your patterns and past, process difficult experiences, and develop healthier ways of coping and relating — to yourself and others.

It might be right for you if:

  • You're struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, or trauma

  • Relationship issues (family, romantic, or personal) are taking a toll

  • You feel stuck, overwhelmed, or like you're just not okay

  • You want to understand why you feel or behave the way you do

  • You're a young person (or the parent of one) who needs extra support

At Halo Journey, our counsellors and psychotherapists work with individuals of all ages — including children, teens, adults, and older adults — as well as couples and families. All sessions are online, all around Australia, at hours that actually suit your life.

Life coaching: for when you know where you want to go (but keep getting in your own way)

Coaching is forward-focused. It's not about digging into the past — it's about closing the gap between where you are now and where you want to be.

Life coaches work with you to identify your goals, challenge the limiting beliefs that are holding you back, build clarity and momentum, and take intentional steps toward the life you actually want. It's practical, action-oriented, and often energising.

It might be right for you if:

  • You feel stuck in a rut but aren't in crisis

  • You have goals — career, relationships, personal growth — but can't seem to move toward them

  • You know something needs to change but aren't sure what or how

  • You want accountability, structure, and someone in your corner

  • You're between 16 and 55 and ready to do the work

At Halo Journey, our life coaching focuses specifically on overcoming limiting beliefs — those sneaky stories we tell ourselves that quietly run the show. If you've ever caught yourself thinking "I'm not good enough," "it'll never work out for me," or "I don't deserve that," coaching might be exactly what you need.

Psychology & psychiatry: for clinical assessment, diagnosis, and medication

Psychologists and psychiatrists are registered healthcare professionals who specialise in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. Psychologists use structured, evidence-based therapies (like CBT, DBT, or schema therapy). Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can also prescribe medication.

This pathway is typically the right one when there's a need for formal diagnosis (e.g. ADHD, autism, a personality disorder), when medication is being considered, or when someone is experiencing severe or complex mental health presentations.

It might be right for you if:

  • You want or need a formal diagnosis

  • You're accessing a Mental Health Care Plan through Medicare

  • You're managing a complex or long-term mental health condition

  • Medication may be part of your treatment

Please note: Halo Journey does not offer psychology or psychiatry services. If this sounds like what you need, we'd encourage you to speak with your GP as a first step — they can assess your situation and refer you to the right provider. No shame, no judgment. Getting the right support matters most.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist? The main differences are in training, scope, and Medicare access. Psychologists complete a minimum of six years of university training and are registered with the Psychology Board of Australia. They can formally assess and diagnose mental health conditions and are often accessed through a GP Mental Health Care Plan (which provides Medicare rebates). Counsellors and psychotherapists are also tertiary-trained and registered with professional bodies like The Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) or the The Australian Counselling Association (ACA). They focus on ongoing therapeutic support, emotional wellbeing, and personal growth rather than clinical diagnosis. A good Counsellor & Psychotherapist will always tell you if assessment by a Psychologist or Psychiatrist is a good idea or necessary.

Can I do counselling online instead of in person? Absolutely — and many people actually prefer it. Online counselling is just as effective as face-to-face for the vast majority of concerns, and it comes with some real advantages: no travel, no waiting rooms, and you can attend from wherever feels most comfortable (yes, your couch counts). At Halo Journey, all of our sessions are delivered online via video, Australia-wide, including evenings and weekends.

Do I need a referral to see a counsellor or life coach? No referral needed — you can book directly with us. For counselling, psychotherapy, or life coaching with Halo Journey, you can reach out and book whenever you're ready.

Is life coaching the same as therapy? Simply put - no. Therapy (like counselling or psychotherapy) tends to explore emotional patterns, past experiences, and mental health concerns. Coaching is more future-focused — it's about identifying goals, removing the mental blocks getting in your way, and building momentum toward the life you want. Both are valuable; they just serve different purposes. Some people benefit from both at different points in their life.

How do I know if I need counselling or coaching? A rough guide: if you're in emotional pain, struggling with your mental health, or working through something difficult from your past or present — counselling is likely the better fit. If you're generally okay but feeling stuck, directionless, or held back by your own beliefs and habits — coaching might be exactly what you need. If you're genuinely unsure, just reach out. We're happy to have a no-pressure chat and point you in the right direction.

Is online counselling covered by Medicare or private health insurance? Medicare rebates are available for sessions with registered psychologists when accessed through a GP Mental Health Care Plan. Counselling and life coaching aren't currently covered by Medicare, but some private health insurance funds do include counselling under their extras cover — it's worth checking your policy. At Halo Journey, we keep our fees as accessible as possible, and we're happy to discuss flexible options if cost is a concern.

What if I'm not sure what kind of support I need? That's genuinely one of the most common things we hear — and it's completely fine. Give us a call, send an email, or book a session and we'll help you figure it out together. Our team has experience across counselling, coaching, mediation, and more, so we can help match you to the right service and the right practitioner for where you're at.

Still not sure? That's completely okay.

Honestly? A lot of people aren't sure which type of support is the right fit — and the best thing you can do is just reach out and have a conversation. Our team at Halo Journey is genuinely happy to chat with you about what's going on and help you figure out what kind of support makes the most sense.

We're not here to put you in a box. We're here to help you find your way.
